UNIT EXTRACT:“Main Geographic Facts”

This chapter provides information about the basic characteristics of the country in terms of political borders; identification of the regions: Highlands, Coast; the Galapagos Islands, and the Oriente; climatic characteristics; provinces and capital cities; flora and fauna typical of the different regions like: the mangrove in the Coast, the high barren plains or páramo in the Highlands, the biodiversity of the tropical rainforest, and the endemic vegetable and animal species in the Galapagos Islands.

SAMPLE OF PROJECTSCHAPTER 1

1. Work in groups to prepare a collage of the geographic or climaticcharacteristics of the different provinces.You are encouraged to use different colors for such purpose.You may include drawings, pictures or real objects representative of each province. Present it to your class in an oral exposition with background music of the typical tunes of every province.

3.Role-play an invitation to a group of foreigners to visit Ecuador. You should give emphasis to the contrasting geographical aspects found in every region.

5.Invent a draining mechanism that solves the problem of flooding for urban and/or rural use.Prepare a commercial for it andtry to “sell”your product to the teachers of your school.

7.Your group is in charge of informing prevention measures to avoid theconsequences of natural disasters like El Niño,earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, land slides, and such.Prepare your campaign andmake the necessary arrangements to use the school facilities for the exposition. Be sure to use realia.

9. Design a FIND SOMEONE WHO game for your class.You need information from your classmates.Example: .. who traveled to a province of the Oriente in the last month;...whose grandmother, or grandfather, was born in _______; ... who lives on a street named after a mountain or river; ... who has never been to ____.You may wish to prepare bingo cards for the game.Offer prizes in the usual style as Bingo is played.
