Dear Colleague: Consuelo Páez Salvador, English Director at Pensionado Universitario and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Quito, hereby requests that you consider the adoption of my English textbook entitled GETTING TO KNOW ECUADOR. As an ELT teacher for over 25 years, long ago I realized that an effective way to make students practice the English language was through dynamic contents about Ecuador. My objective in writing GETTING TO KNOW ECUADOR has been to promote cultural values among Ecuadorian youngsters by means of using the English language. After many years of hard work, I was finally able to accomplish its publication under the editing advisory of Licenciado Pablo Mejía. GETTING TO KNOW ECUADOR was published by División Holos-DIMAXI last October. At the moment a REVISED EDITION is available. GETTING TO KNOW ECUADOR is designed under the modern pedagogical principles of: learning styles, multiple intelligences, and the development of meaningful learning. In six chapters, I direct the students’ recollection of prior knowledge about Ecuador’s geography, history, civics, oral tradition, and tourism towards an attractive evaluation and a practical application of language acquisition. For the purpose of content personalization, every chapter brings a list of ten projects. It is here where the students become the protagonists in the classroom as they choose, freely, how to show classmates what they already know about the country. The students at Pensionado Universitario have been working with this material since the last two school years. Now, when their classes have finished, I am proud to say that GETTING TO KNOW ECUADOR has thoroughly motivated them to investigate about the country and has cultivated a positive cultural identity. Among the many projects developed under the guidance of two different teachers, we have poems to our great historical figures; songs with musical arrangements and lyrics; videos re-enacting historical episodes; charts depicting the tourist potential of the different provinces; models of the country’s pre-Columbian ruins, travel brochures, and a long list of more creative work. GETTING TO KNOW ECUADOR is the first book of a Social Studies series and it is unique in its kind. I plan to produce two more volumes: one about each province of the country and another one about oral tradition.
